IV Sedation

Dollarphotoclub_47333061 copyAlmost half of all adults admit to having moderate fears about receiving dental treatment and millions of Americans avoid the dentist altogether.

At Diamond Dental Group in Lutz, Florida, we’re aware of the anxiety surrounding dental work, and are committed to providing our patients with an experience that is as stress and pain-free as possible.

IV sedation is one of the options we provide to manage the discomfort and fear often associated with dental procedures.

What Is IV Sedation?

IV (meaning intravenous) is medication administered through the veins. Because of its almost immediate affect, many patients prefer this option.

Is IV Sedation Safe?

IV sedation is a very safe choice when carried out under the supervision of trained medical staff.

Advantages to IV Sedation

  • It is a safe and effective way of relieving fear and anxiety associated with dental procedures
  • Years of dentistry can be completed in a much shorter time period
  • “Sleep” through your dental visit with little or no memory of the visit
  • No awareness of the sights, sounds or smells of the dental office
  • Complete control of gag reflexes

Will I Experience Any Pain During IV Sedation?

Even though you are not completely unconscious, most patients feel extremely relaxed, drowsy, and some even actually fall asleep completely, remembering little, if anything at all from the visit. The drugs will also contribute towards a pain-free period after the procedure.

Possible Side Effects of IV Sedation

As with any medication, the use of sedative anesthetic agents can result in side effects. However, the incidences of side effects with sedation are very rare and include unintended loss of consciousness, drowsiness, dizziness, shivering, headaches, and post-sedation nausea and vomiting.

Before Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation

  • You should refrain from eating or drinking (including water) for eight hours before receiving IV sedation.
  • Refrain from smoking for at least 12 hours before your dental appointment.
  • A responsible adult should remain in the office during the procedure and be there to drive you home.
  • We recommend allowing a full 24 hours to pass before attempting to drive a vehicle or operate any machinery.
  • Please remove jewelry, contact lenses, and dentures prior to your procedure.
  • If you are experiencing any medical symptoms, such as a fever, sore throat, or stomach upset, please call us as soon as possible.
  • If you currently take daily oral medications, please check with us prior to your dental procedure for instructions.
